Samsung Electronics has recently acquired South Korea-based Rainbow Robotics.
Effectively gaining control of the robotics company to boost the tech giant’s initiatives in humanoid robot development.
This was after Samsung expanded its ownership by 14.7% to a whopping 35%, which in itself was a massive growth from its initial 86.8 billion won ($59 million) investment into the robotics company in 2023.
Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology found Rainbow Robotics in 2011, with one of their iconic achievements being “Hubo” - Korea’s first walking robot.
The companies will form a council to develop business strategies and explore new robot technologies.
Samsung plans to use Rainbow Robotics' technology, including collaborative robots and autonomous mobile systems, to improve its manufacturing and logistics.
The electronics maker created a Future Robotics Office that will report to the CEO to develop new robot technology.
Dr. Jun-Ho Oh, a Rainbow Robotics founder and honorary KAIST professor, will advise the new office.
Rainbow Robotics will gain access to Samsung's global sales network to reach international markets.
The partnership combines Samsung's artificial intelligence expertise with Rainbow's robot technology.
Samsung sees robotics as a key growth area for its future business.
